Provision of Public Liability Insurance for the Territory Wildlife Parks for a Period of 12 Months

The Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security (DEPWS) requires the services of a suitably qualified and experienced insurer to provide Public Liability Insurance for the Territory Wildlife Parks (the Territory Wildlife Park and the Alice Springs Desert Park).The provision of Public Liability Insurance for the Territory Wildlife Parks is to cover any and all claims of personal injury or property damage which may be lodged by any visitor to the Territory Wildlife Parks.There are some specific functions that need to be noted:• Both Wildlife Parks offer paid animal encounters involving interactions between visitors and animals. Visitors may touch, hold or feed them. For example:o Posing near Wedge-tailed eagles, snakes, frill-necked lizards or other animals for photographs;o Holding an owl ‘on the glove’ for a photograph; ando Tossing fish to pelicans, hand-feeding freshwater whiprays, macropods, sugar gliders and frogs (among others).• The Alice Springs Desert Park has transferred its operation of its café and functions to private operators, who will be required to have their own Public Liability Insurance.• The Territory Wildlife Park operates two ‘trains’ which are open-sided vehicles with no seatbelts. Speed is restricted to 20 km/h, however there are risks associated with this mode of transport. The Desert Park hires out mobility scooters and operates an electric transit vehicle to assist with visitor transportation also.• There is scope at both Parks for visitors to interact with wild animals, for example, flying foxes at the Territory Wildlife Park, venomous and non-venomous snakes at both parks, macropods, dingoes and various invertebrates.
