Darwin Region - Wurrumiyanga - Consultancy - Northern Territory Environmental Protection Authority (NTEPA) Referral

The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics (DIPL) has been engaged by the Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities (DTFHaC) to design and construct a new residential subdivision in the remote community of Wurrumiyanga which is located east of the airport.The objectives of this assessment were as follows:1. To gain an understanding of the current environmental conditions in the project area.2. To identify potential impacts that the development may have on terrestrial biodiversity, with a particular focus on threatened species and communities.3. To propose potential mitigation measures that can be implemented to minimize any adverse impacts.4. To ensure compliance with relevant legislation, including the Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999, the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 1976, and the Environmental Protection Act 2019.As a result of this investigation, it was determined that threatened Typhonium species were present within the subdivision area. The department then commissioned further surveys to ascertain the presence of Typhonium beyond the proposed development to gain an understanding of any potential greater sub-population to reduce the impact from significant when contemplating removal/or transplant of the threatened species. The findings from these assessments are detailed in the Wurrumiyanga Environmental Assessment Report, 2022 and Typhonium Survey Report, 2023. The reports will be provided to the successful consultant.
