Summary and scope

Under the Water Act 1989, Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs) are required to develop Regional Waterway Strategies to guide strategic investment in waterway management over a ten ‑ year period. These strategies encompass rivers, wetlands and floodplains, and aim to maintain or improve environmental condition while supporting environmental, cultural, social (including recreational), and economic values.The renewed North East RWS will include:A regional overview of waterway valuesIdentification of threats, challenges and opportunitiesA 50 ‑ year vision for waterways in the regionLong ‑ term (20 ‑ year) and medium ‑ term (10 ‑ year) environmental outcomesDefined categories of management areasIdentification and/or ranking of sites for management within each category
