Summary and scope

The Victorian Integrated Survey of Travel and Activity (VISTA) administered by the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) is a core transport dataset that provides critical information on people movements across all modes of travel. The ongoing survey allows identification of travel patterns including how, where, when and why people travel, and how travel patterns are changing over time. Up-to-date information from VISTA is crucial to maintain the Victorian Integrated Transport Model (VITM) and is used across the transport portfolio to inform project and infrastructure planning and policy development.All personal travel (excluding commercial and visitor travel) made by respondents is captured in VISTA. Importantly, VISTA is the only data source available that provides directly comparable data relating to different methods of travel for different travel purpose.VISTA is administered as a continuous survey, with samples drawn in one-year periods approximately corresponding to financial years. Under the current contract, data collection will conclude in July 2026. The successful Tenderer will have all systems, processes, and teams in place for collection to continue with minimal interruption as close to the start of the 2026-27 financial year as practical.
