Summary and scope
The construction of new retaining walls at the Carmila and Greenhill Waste Management Facilities is a project designed to overcome structural defects of the existing structures, and to provide certainty about structural integrity of the waste collection infrastructure and enhance the safety and operability of the waste management facilities. The existing Waste Management Facilities have a disposal ramp with two bays drop off areas incorporating a single 6m L x 2.4m H shipping container as support. These facilities feature heavy grade galvanised tubular steel safety post & rails incorporating swinging waste chutes. The general condition of the supporting structure (shipping container) is poor, with some side collisions and corrosion on the front face. However, earth embankments and bitumen sealed access and drop off areas at both locations are in a relatively good condition. Remedial work is required to rectify the structural defects of the existing structure. Due to lack of access for a thorough internal inspection of the structural integrity of the existing structure (shipping containers) and considering visually observed defects, recommendation was made to decommission the shipping containers and replace them with a retaining wall, to be constructed as per the engineering design drawings.
