Summary and scope

The City of Stonnington has an impressive collection of public art that has been acquired over the last thirty years. In October 2009, Council invited selected parties to submit proposals for the design and installation of a public artwork (Sculpture) at Phoenix Park, corner Rob Roy Road and Ivanhoe Grove, Malvern East, between the library and the Children’s Centre (Site). Emily Floyd's artwork was successful for this commission and was installed in 2010. In 2015-2016, some repairs were completed; it now requires some painting and general repairs since this time. Description of "An Unfolding Space": An Unfolding Space is a monument to the experience of childhood and the potential of community. The colourful cast metal peacocks and blocks symbolize the unfolding possibilities of books, learning and knowledge. The two phrases of utopian text, “A Community Garden” and “An Unfolding Space”, suggest Phoenix Park is a community space that is transformed and developed when locals come together to learn, grow and exchange ideas. Original installation: Six footings were installed with reinforcing mesh and 25mpa concrete. Footings were installed 100mm below ground level, drilling and chemsetting of sculptures Material: Aluminum, stainless steel, vinyl, epoxy paint Blocks made of fabricated steel painted with 2 part epoxy Peacocks aluminum casting and then layers of painted laser cut aluminum Approximate height: Height of approx. 2 meters with a ground area of 5 x 3.5 meters Weight: Unknown It is unknown if the successful contractor would like to remove the artworks to restore or complete the restoration and repairs onsite.
