Summary and scope
Lake Bungana, Lake Brearley and Brickworks Lake (the ‘Maylands Lakes’) are located on the Maylands Peninsula, in close proximity to the Swan River and approximately 5km east of the Perth CBD, and currently are experiencing consistent algal blooms and midge control problems. The City is considering options to improve water quality in the lake system as Lakes Bungana and Brearley are effectively mine voids with no throughflow of surface water or groundwater, and are end-point-sinks experiencing high nutrient inputs and salinity changes through evaporation. A proposal has been received by the City for a possible solution aimed at improving the water quality in Lake Brearley by creating a fresh water cycle using groundwater from the adjacent Peninsula Golf Course irrigation bores. This project is proposed to be undertaken in two stages as follows: Stage 1 – Trial using the two bores located near the driving range and temporary above ground infrastructure connecting to and pumping from Lake Brearley. Stage 2 – Permanent water circulation system between the golf course irrigation dam and the Maylands Lakes using below ground infrastructure.
