The Koombana Lookout (Lookout/Site) is one of Hedland’s best locations for viewing the incoming ships into the harbor as well as stunning sunsets. The Lookout is named after the ‘lost’ ship “SS Koombana” which was a passenger ship, suspected to be lost off the coast of Port Hedland with no survivors. The location of the shipwreck is unknown to this day. The Lookout is visited by tourists throughout the year for short stops to show off the view, and to take a break or a phone call. A review of the activity in the area shows that most visitors do not stop at the Lookout for more than 5-10 mins. The Town would like to improve the amenities at the Lookout to encourage longer stays and support the further activation of the Site.
