Summary and scope

Glencore has announced the closure of the underground copper mine and copper concentrator in Mount Isa which will result in the loss of 1,200 jobs directly. Without intervention, it is estimate that this will result in further job losses in the order of 3,600 in the service sector and a halving in Mount Isa’s population. In response to the announcement by Glencore regarding its closure of the Mount Isa copper mining operations and the potential affect this will have on the city of Mount Isa and its economy, a Mount Isa Copper Mine Closure Taskforce has been set up as a joint initiative between the Council and the State Government. Council is undertaking a priority initiative; identifying requirements to accelerate the diversification and transformation of the Mount Isa economy in order to fight to retain its population base and to prosper into the future. This initiative will focus on six (6) pillars of the economic base, establishing pathways to realise investment in each of these critical areas. These pillars are: Agriculture; Energy; Resources; Critical Infrastructure; Tourism; and Small and Medium business. This specific Invitation to Tender focuses on the AGRICULTURE pillar. Invitations to Tender are also available, seeking specialised consultants for the other five pillars. This Invitation to Tender process is being managed by Peak Services on behalf of Mount Isa City Council.
