Summary and scope

The Town of Port Hedland (Town) is seeking submissions from suitably experienced and qualified Contractors to construct the shared path, linking the footpath from McPherson Street to Corney Street in Port Hedland, and Dempster Street to Sutherland Street in Port Hedland. Work is to be completed in the 2024/25 financial year with the works being completed by 6 May 2025. The Town has been successful in obtaining a Western Australian Bicycle Network (WABN) grant from the Department of Transport (DoT). As per the grant agreement requirement, all works must be completed on or before 06 May 2025 Currently, the network connection from Port Hedland ends at Goode Street, and the path network does not extend north towards Port Hedland. There is currently no path available for cyclists and pedestrians. This situation is considered to be highly undesirable as it poses safety risks to all road users. The need for this path is evident, and providing a shared path will have significant benefits to the community. The current environmental attributes do not encourage walking or cycling as there isn’t a connected network between Goode Street and Sutherland Street, and thus there is poor accessibility to activity centres and recreation areas. Additionally, this shared footpath will improve pedestrian access to shared community spaces such as: Rock of Ages, Sutherland Street foreshore, Civic Centre Gardens, Cemetery Beach Park, Spoilbank Marina, Port Hedland Boat Ramp, and Marapikurrinya Park.
