Summary and scope

Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology is a proven capability used by multiple law enforcement agencies and sectors including Federal regulators, Justice, Security, Local Government and private enterprises. ANPR provides a valuable safety and crime prevention tool in emergency management, traffic, and law enforcement operations. The ANPR solution currently used by the Western Australia Police Force allows for real time alerts to be received at the State Operations Command Centre (SOCC) when a vehicle of interest (VOI), such as a stolen motor vehicle, is detected by ANPR cameras. These alerts assist police to locate and intercept vehicles linked to criminal activity, missing persons, persons at risk, and other policing priorities to increase community safety. The ANPR solution also allows for analysis of data that enables the examination of vehicle movement patterns, linked vehicles and tracking of vehicles over time to build criminal intelligence and investigations.
