Summary and scope
Council is planning for the population of Wagga Wagga to increase to 100,000 residents in the future, which means an increasing demand for services, housing, jobs and entertainment. While population growth will generate an increased demand for housing (which the City is already experiencing), demand for housing in Wagga Wagga is not limited to demand solely arising from population growth. There is also demand driven by workers in key industries, such as the City’s two hospitals and education sector, alongside targeted demand for the next 10 years from key infrastructure projects occurring in the Region (such as Inland Rail, Project Energy Connect, HumeLink and Defence infrastructure upgrades). A clear strategy needs to be developed to address these key issues, including across the short, medium and long-term. Identifying suitable areas for additional housing, providing a diversity of housing and encouraging both affordable housing and housing affordability are critical steps to enable Council to provide a high quality of life for residents of all backgrounds, ages and incomes, now and into the future.
